Ingredients

  • 1 prepared angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes about 10 to 12 oz
  • 2 lbs fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar for macerating
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 16 oz Cool Whip or whipped topping, thawed
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened optional
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar for cream cheese layer
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • Large trifle bowl or 9x13 glass dish
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Hand mixer
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Macerate sliced strawberries with sugar and lemon juice for at least 20 minutes until juicy.
  2. Beat cream cheese with powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Fold in half the whipped topping to make the cream layer.
  3. Layer half the cake cubes in the bottom of a trifle bowl. Spoon half the strawberries and juices over the top.
  4. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the strawberry layer.
  5. Add the remaining cake cubes, then top with remaining strawberries.
  6. Finish with remaining whipped topping spread smoothly across the surface. Refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

  • Macerate strawberries first for maximum juice and flavor in the cake layers.
  • Chill at least 2 hours, overnight is better.
  • Use a clear bowl to show off the layers.
  • Add whole strawberry garnish right before serving, not during assembly.
